How to Stain a Deck (Prep Right or Do It Twice)

Step 1: Test Whether Your Deck Is Ready

Step 2: Clean the Deck Thoroughly

Bare wood accumulates mildew, tannin stains, dirt, and oxidized gray fiber. Stain those things in and you cut the finish life in half.

Mix a purpose-made deck wash (Defy Extreme Cleaner, Total Wood Preservative) or use a homemade oxygen bleach solution: 1 cup of OxiClean per gallon of warm water. Apply it to dry wood with a garden sprayer or stiff brush, let it dwell 10-15 minutes, then scrub stubborn areas and rinse.

If you are using a pressure washer for home use, keep it at 1,000-1,500 PSI and hold the nozzle 12 inches from the surface. More pressure than that erodes the soft grain between growth rings and leaves the wood fuzzy and rough, which creates a bad surface for stain. A fan tip (25-40 degree) is safer than a narrow pinpoint tip.

After the wash and rinse, apply a deck brightener if you have weathered gray wood. A brightener is an oxalic-acid rinse that neutralizes the alkaline residue from the cleaner and opens the wood grain for better stain penetration. Step 3: Sand Rough Spots and Replace Damaged Boards

After the wood dries from cleaning, feel for rough spots. Any board with raised grain or fuzzy texture from the pressure washer needs a light pass with 80-grit sandpaper. You are not sanding down to fresh wood — just smoothing the surface so the stain goes on evenly and does not build up in the texture.

Check screws and nails too. Pop any that are sitting proud of the board surface. Countersink them slightly below flush so they are not creating a high spot where stain pools and cures unevenly.

If any boards failed the screwdriver test back in Step 1, this is the time to swap them out. Pressure-treat the replacements with the same species and profile as the originals. New wood may need to weather for a few weeks before it takes stain at the same rate as the older boards around it.

Step 4: Let the Deck Dry Completely

This step does more to determine whether the stain holds than anything else.

After cleaning and any repairs, the wood needs 48 hours minimum in warm weather (70s, low humidity) before staining. If it has been overcast or cool, plan for 72 hours. If you have access to a moisture meter, Wagner makes a pinless model that runs about $30 — shoot for below 15% moisture content before you open the stain. Above 19% and most stain manufacturers specifically tell you not to apply.

Wet wood does not accept stain. The stain sits on top of the water table in the wood fibers, cures on the surface, and then peels in sheets when the moisture eventually works its way out. Step 5: Apply the First Coat

Work a 3-4 inch natural-bristle brush into the gaps first, getting stain into the sides of the boards where a roller will not reach. Then roll the deck surface in 3-4 board widths at a time, working with the wood grain. Immediately follow the roller with a brush to work the stain in and eliminate any roller lap marks or pooling. Coverage runs 200-300 square feet per gallon on a first coat of thirsty wood. A 300-square-foot deck needs roughly 1.0-1.5 gallons for the first coat. Buy more than you think you need — you will use leftover stain for touch-ups in years 2 and 3 and buying a second gallon later is more expensive than buying two at the start.

Apply in the morning or on overcast days. Staining in direct afternoon sun on a hot deck flashes the solvent off before the stain has time to penetrate the wood. The stain dries on the surface instead of in the wood and you lose most of the durability advantage of an oil-based product. Check the weather and avoid applying within 24-48 hours of expected rain.

Step 6: Second Coat and Curing

Keep foot traffic off the deck for 24 hours after the final coat, furniture off for 72 hours. Full cure takes about a week. Oil-based stains cure slower in cool or humid weather, so plan accordingly if you are doing this in early fall.

Once cured, the stain is significantly more water-resistant. You can use a garden hose to test by watching whether water beads up and rolls off — that is what you want. Common Mistakes

Skipping the dry time. Forty-eight hours feels long when you have a project underway. The stain will let you know you rushed it, usually the following spring.

Using a foam brush for the main application. Foam does not work stain into the wood — it sits it on top. Natural bristle or a quality synthetic is the right choice. The $6 chip brush is fine for the gaps; it is not the right tool for the field.
