How to Replace a Light Fixture (Step-by-Step)

Replacing a light fixture is one of those jobs that sounds more dangerous than it is. There are three wires to connect. They’re color-coded. Swap a bare-bulb shop fixture for something nicer, update the old globe light that’s been in the ceiling since 1994, the steps are the same either way.

Step 1: Cut Power at the Breaker
Find the circuit that feeds the fixture at your electrical panel. Flip it off, then flip the wall switch for the fixture. The light should go out. If it doesn’t, you have the wrong breaker.
The wall switch alone isn’t enough. A switch only interrupts one leg of the circuit. The wires in the ceiling box can still be live even when the switch is off. The breaker cuts everything.
Label the breaker with a piece of tape before you walk away so nobody flips it back on while you’re working.
Step 2: Test the Wires Before You Touch Them
This is the step that matters most. A non-contact voltage tester is a $20 tool that holds the tip near a wire and beeps if it detects a live circuit. Get one. Use it every time.
After removing the canopy (see Step 3), hold the tester near each wire before you touch anything. No beep on any wire means you’re clear. A beep means power is still present somewhere, which usually means you have the wrong breaker. Go back to the panel, find the right one, and test again.

Step 3: Remove the Old Fixture
Most canopy covers on flush-mount ceiling fixtures attach with a center nut, a couple of screws, or both. Loosen them and the canopy drops down to expose the wiring and the mounting hardware inside the box.
Support the canopy with one hand while you unscrew it. The wire connections are usually short enough that the fixture will dangle from the wires while you work. Don’t yank on them.
Once the canopy is down, take a photo of how the wires are connected before you touch anything. Useful reference if anything seems off later.
Step 4: Disconnect the Wires
You’ll see two or three twisted-wire connections capped with plastic wire nuts. Unscrew the wire nuts counterclockwise and separate the wires.
In most residential ceiling boxes you’ll find:
- Black (hot) from the ceiling paired with black from the old fixture
- White (neutral) from the ceiling paired with white from the old fixture
- Bare copper or green wire (ground) connected to a screw or twisted together
Set the old fixture aside. Straighten the wire ends if they’re bent or corroded, and strip about 3/4 inch of insulation if any are too short to work with.
Step 5: Swap the Mounting Bracket if Needed
The mounting bracket (also called a crossbar or strap) attaches to the junction box and holds the fixture. The old bracket is usually a flat metal bar screwed across the box opening.
New fixtures include their own bracket. Check the instructions to see if it’s meant to replace the existing one or attach to it. Most modern fixtures expect to hang from their own hardware, so swap it out if the instructions call for it.
Tighten the bracket screws until the bracket doesn’t shift. The fixture’s full weight hangs from this.
One thing to check: the junction box’s weight rating. Standard plastic old-work boxes are rated for 35 lbs. Boxes rated for 50 lbs or more have the rating printed or stamped on the box itself. If the new fixture is heavier than what the box is rated for, the box needs to be upgraded before you hang anything on it. A chandelier or anything over 35 lbs needs a metal box anchored to a ceiling joist, not plastic wings in drywall.
Step 6: Wire the New Fixture
Match colors: black wire from the ceiling to black wire from the fixture, white to white. Twist each pair clockwise until the bare copper ends are fully inside the wire nut, then give the nut a firm clockwise spin until it’s snug. Tug each connection gently to confirm it won’t pull free.
The bare copper or green ground wire from the ceiling connects to the green screw on the mounting bracket. If the new fixture also has a ground wire, twist the two bare copper wires together and cap them with a wire nut first, then connect to the bracket screw.
Wrap a half-turn of electrical tape around each wire nut if you want extra security. Not required by code but it takes five seconds and keeps the cap from backing off over time.
A note on older wiring: aluminum wiring looks dull silver rather than copper-colored. Aluminum-to-copper connections need antioxidant compound and connectors rated for AL/CU use. If you see aluminum wiring, call an electrician rather than using standard wire nuts.
Step 7: Mount the Fixture
Fold the wires carefully up into the box and seat the canopy against the ceiling. Tighten the center nut or mounting screws until the canopy sits flat.
If there’s a gap between the canopy and the ceiling, the wires are probably bunched up underneath. Loosen the screws, tuck the wires more carefully into the box, and try again. The canopy should be flush.
Install the bulbs. The maximum wattage per socket is printed inside the canopy or on a sticker near the socket. Stay at or below that number. Energy Star-certified LED bulbs pull 9-10 watts and put out the same light as a 60-watt incandescent while generating a fraction of the heat, which extends the life of the fixture and the wiring inside it.
Step 8: Restore Power and Test
Go back to the breaker and flip it on. Flip the wall switch. The light should come on.
If it doesn’t, flip the breaker off again and check the wire connections. A loose wire nut is the most common cause. Occasionally a fixture has a defective socket from the factory, which is a return problem, not a wiring problem.
Common Mistakes
Skipping the voltage tester. The wall switch being off isn’t confirmation that the wires are safe. The tester is confirmation.
Wrong mounting bracket. New fixtures usually come with a bracket designed for their weight and mounting pattern. Using the old bracket can leave the fixture at the wrong height or not properly supported.
Loose wire nuts. A wire nut that spins on without resistance didn’t seat properly. The bare copper ends should be fully inside the cap with no copper visible outside. Retighten until the connection holds under a firm tug.
Hanging a heavy fixture from a standard box. The 35-lb rating on a standard plastic box isn’t conservative, it’s the ceiling. A chandelier over that weight needs a purpose-built fan/fixture box anchored to framing.
Wrong bulb wattage. Exceeding the socket’s rated wattage traps heat inside the fixture. Over time that degrades the insulation on the wiring, which creates a fire risk. The sticker is there for a reason.
When to Call a Pro
- The wires in the box are aluminum (dull silver, not copper-colored). Aluminum-to-copper connections without the right connectors and antioxidant compound are a fire risk.
- You find more than three wires in the box. This usually means the box is mid-run in a circuit or part of a switch loop, which changes how things connect.
- There’s no ground wire and you’re installing a metal-bodied fixture in a bathroom or wet area.
- The existing box is a flat pancake box screwed directly to a joist with no lip for a standard bracket. Older construction sometimes needs adapters.
- The wiring colors or connections don’t match what’s described here and you’re not sure which wire is which.
FAQ
Do I need a permit to replace a light fixture? In most areas, a like-for-like fixture replacement on an existing circuit doesn’t require a permit. Moving a fixture, adding a new circuit, or installing a fan where there was only a light often does. Check with your local building department if you’re unsure. Most inspectors aren’t interested in a routine fixture swap.
Can I replace a ceiling light with a ceiling fan? Only if the junction box is fan-rated. Fan-rated boxes are stamped or labeled as such and are mounted to a joist or installed with a brace kit that spans between joists.
