Smart switches use labeled wire leads or labeled screw terminals. Follow the manufacturer’s wiring diagram included in the box. General mapping:

  • LINE terminal or black lead marked LINE: wire from the breaker panel
  • LOAD terminal or black lead marked LOAD: wire going to the fixture
  • NEUTRAL terminal or white lead: the neutral wire from the back of the box
  • GROUND terminal or green lead: bare copper ground
